An exclusive interview with Yassin Madiwa Hozza

We had the privilege of speaking with Yassin Madiwa, Chief Executive Director of Friends of Usambara Society, to learn more about their impactful work in conservation, challenges, and the role businesses and individuals play in driving environmental sustainability. 

Q1: Tell us a bit about yourself, what’s your story

Thank you for this great opportunity! My Name is Yassin Madiwa, Chief Executive Director of Friends of Usambara Society. Friends of Usambara Society (FoU) is a not-for-profit organization entitled with a mandate to promote sustainable tourism development and environmental conservation. Its fortune that  I was born and raised in the Usambara Mountains, a place renowned for its biodiversity and natural beauty. Growing up, I witnessed both the wonders of this unique ecosystem and the challenges it faced, such as deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices. These experiences inspired me to pursue a path in environmental conservation. Leading the Friends of Usambara Society has been both a privilege and a responsibility. Our mission is to conserve the Usambara ecosystem while empowering local communities to adopt sustainable practices. Over the years, I’ve worked with passionate individuals, both locally and internationally, to restore forests, improve water sources, and create eco-friendly livelihoods that benefit both people and nature. For more than a decade, FoU has been pursuing an important role by consistently working to restore degraded forests as well as leveraging sustainable livelihoods in Western Usambara region in collaboration with its esteemed partners. 

Q2: What are the biggest challenges you face when planting trees?


Tree planting and reforestation efforts face numerous challenges that require thoughtful planning and long-term commitment. Selecting the right site is critical, as soil quality, space availability, and land-use conflicts can significantly impact success. Poor soil conditions or competing land needs, such as agriculture and grazing, often require innovative solutions and community cooperation. Additionally, limited water availability during early growth stages makes consistent watering a challenge, especially in regions with irregular rainfall patterns. Proper irrigation strategies must balance preventing overwatering in wet areas and managing scarcity in drought-prone zones.

Newly planted trees are particularly vulnerable to pests, diseases, and competition from weeds or existing vegetation, which can limit access to sunlight, water, and nutrients. Monitoring and timely interventions are essential to protect saplings and ensure healthy growth. Furthermore, maintaining trees over time demands continuous resources and labor, including mulching, pruning, and tending. Financial constraints add another layer of difficulty, as high initial costs for seedlings, irrigation, and manpower can limit scalability.

Choosing appropriate tree species for specific conditions is vital to ensuring resilience and ecological compatibility. Poor species selection or lack of genetic diversity can lead to vulnerabilities that threaten long-term success. Additionally, community engagement plays a pivotal role in overcoming misconceptions and gaining local support. Public education is often necessary to highlight the environmental, social, and economic benefits of tree planting, such as improved biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and sustainable livelihoods.

Despite these challenges, reforestation remains a powerful tool for combating deforestation, restoring ecosystems, and addressing climate change. Success depends on strategic planning, collaborative community efforts, and a commitment to monitoring and maintaining planted trees over the long term.

Q3: How do your projects impact the local ecosystem, wildlife, and biodiversity?


The Usambara Mountains are often referred to as the “Galápagos of Africa” because of their unique and diverse flora and fauna. Many species found here exist nowhere else on Earth. Our tree-planting projects aim to restore these habitats, benefiting wildlife such as the Usambara three-horned chameleon (Trioceros deremensis) and the endemic Usambara eagle-owl (Bubo vosseleri).

Restoring forests helps stabilize the soil, reducing landslides and erosion that threaten both ecosystems and human settlements. It also improves water retention in the soil, replenishing natural springs and streams that are vital to the surrounding communities. These projects promote a balanced ecosystem where pollinators, seed dispersers, and other wildlife thrive, contributing to a resilient environment. 

Tree planting projects have profound benefits for local ecosystems, wildlife, and biodiversity when implemented thoughtfully. They provide essential habitats and food for diverse species, create vertical habitats that support ecological layering, and enhance biodiversity by fostering native flora and countering invasive species. These projects restore critical ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, air and water purification, soil health improvement, and climate regulation. By mitigating natural disasters and restoring degraded landscapes such as riparian zones, tree planting strengthens ecosystem resilience and supports both wildlife and human communities.

Q4: What steps do you take to monitor and evaluate the success of your tree-planting projects over time?


Community involvement, scientific innovation, and continuous learning are at the core of how we monitor and evaluate our reforestation projects. We work closely with local groups such as farmers, youth, experts from the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), local government leaders, and specialized project teams. These stakeholders play a vital role in ensuring the project’s success and sustainability by observing tree survival, identifying issues such as pests or diseases, and reporting any damage caused by environmental factors or human activities. Their first-hand knowledge allows for timely interventions, ensuring the long-term health and growth of the trees.

To complement these efforts, we use advanced scientific tools to enhance the precision and scope of our monitoring. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imagery are key to mapping and analyzing reforested areas. These technologies help us track changes in vegetation, canopy density, and biodiversity, providing a clear picture of the project’s progress while highlighting areas that require extra attention. Regular field visits by our teams are also essential. These visits allow us to physically assess tree health, survival rates, and growth, addressing any signs of stress, disease, or nutrient deficiencies as they arise.

Baseline studies are an essential part of our process, laying the foundation for effective monitoring and evaluation. Before planting begins, we conduct detailed assessments of soil quality, existing vegetation, water resources, and climate conditions. This baseline data serves as a benchmark against which we measure progress, enabling us to monitor improvements in soil fertility, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem health.

Feedback and collaboration are central to our approach. Insights gathered from community reports, field observations, and advanced tools are analyzed and shared with stakeholders, including local communities, project partners, and government authorities.

This holistic approach ensures the long-term success of reforestation efforts while creating a replicable model for environmental restoration across diverse regions.

Q5: What types of trees do you plant, and why did you select those particular species?

We plant both native and non-native tree species, carefully selecting those that are non-invasive and suited to the local environment. This balanced approach ensures ecological restoration while providing socio-economic benefits to the surrounding communities.

  • Indigenous Species: Native trees such as Podocarpus, Newtonia buchananii, and Albizia gummifera are at the heart of our reforestation efforts. These species play a crucial role in restoring natural ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and preventing soil erosion. Being native to the Usambara Mountains, they provide essential habitats for local wildlife, enhancing the overall resilience of the ecosystem.
  • Agroforestry Species: To integrate conservation with livelihoods, we plant trees like avocado and Grevillea robusta. These species offer fruit, timber, and shade for crops, creating direct economic benefits for local farmers. This approach encourages community participation in conservation while promoting sustainable land use practices.

Q6: What do you think is the role of businesses when it comes to sustainability?

Businesses play a crucial role in driving sustainability, particularly in tree-planting projects, by leveraging their resources, influence, and innovation. They can provide essential financial support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, ensuring the long-term success of reforestation efforts. Beyond funding, businesses can adopt sustainable practices, such as offsetting carbon emissions through tree planting and promoting eco-friendly supply chains. Public-private partnerships further amplify their impact by enabling collaboration with governments, NGOs, and local communities. Companies can also raise awareness among their customers and stakeholders, advocating for environmental conservation and encouraging sustainable behaviors. Through innovation, businesses contribute advanced tools like GIS mapping and drone technology to enhance project efficiency and monitoring. By creating green jobs and fostering community engagement, they support local livelihoods while restoring ecosystems. Most importantly, businesses that commit to long-term, impactful actions demonstrate leadership in building a sustainable future for both the environment and society.
