Why is purchasing land for nature reserves needed?
Purchasing land for nature reserves is vital for environmental conservation. These reserves serve as crucial habitats, protecting diverse ecosystems and saving endangered species from extinction. Conservation efforts through land acquisition foster biodiversity by providing safe havens free from habitat destruction and industrial incursion. Additionally, securing land aids in mitigating landscape fragmentation, ensuring wildlife connectivity and migration, and reducing the risk of biodiversity loss. It also contributes to climate change resilience, acting as a buffer against extreme weather events and supporting carbon sequestration.
Where is the purchasing of nature reserves done?
Most of our projects take place in habitats that are particularly critical areas for our planet. We’ve supported projects in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Our projects aim to protect and preserve large portions of land that are rich in biodiversity.
How does purchasing land work?
For the purchase of land, our partners work with local communities and government agencies to identify and acquire important land for wildlife. This land is then preserved, often through a combination of techniques such as establishing protected areas, regulations for controlled hunting, and ensuring that only sustainable development takes place on the land.
Who owns the land that was purchased?
Land ownership varies widely across the projects we support. This is because land ownership and ecosystem protection laws vary across the countries we operate in. Dots.eco does not own any of the land we help purchase, and neither do our business partners or the end-users whose activities help raise the funds to purchase the land. What we do is help fundraise for the purchase itself, which is usually led by an NGO that is an environmental partner of ours. Depending on the legal framework of the project, ownership may be assigned to any of the following parties:
- local community associations/entities (legal definitions and names varying per country),
- our environmental partners in cases where they manage privately owned protected areas,
- incorporated into government-owned protected land programs with the local government having ownership of the parcel (again, legal definitions and names varying per country).

We ensure that all of our partners have a strong track record of successful land acquisitions and conservation projects. Before signing off on a deal, our partners work with trusted local stakeholders and experts to create strategies for their long-term sustainable development. Additionally, we vet all organizations we partner with to ensure their financial and professional transparency and provide regular reports on their activities and impact.
