Understanding the Role of Fire in Nature
Natural fires play an essential role in certain ecosystems. They help clear away old, dense vegetation, making room for new growth and increasing biodiversity. Fire-adapted areas, such as grasslands and certain forests, have evolved alongside fire, and many plant species in these ecosystems depend on fire to reproduce.
But wildfires are different from these natural fires. Wildfires are intense, often uncontrolled, and can rapidly consume vast areas of forest, threatening wildlife and entire habitats. Driven by human-caused climate change, they have become more frequent and severe, especially in regions that have not evolved to handle fire. In such places, wildfires can have devastating impacts, sometimes pushing certain species to the brink of extinction by eliminating the specific habitats they need to survive.
The Climate-Wildfire Cycle
The relationship between wildfires and climate change is a feedback loop that intensifies the problem. Rising global temperatures, prolonged droughts, and other climate-driven factors increase the likelihood of wildfires. When these fires burn, they release large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, further accelerating climate change and creating conditions for even more fires in the future. This cycle is already contributing to record-breaking wildfires around the world, from Australia to Canada.
It’s a complex issue, but our mission is simple: to break this cycle by restoring ecosystems and strengthening landscapes against future fires. We are working on projects that bring together community knowledge, scientific expertise, and sustainable practices to make a difference.
Building Wildfire Resilience Through Habitat Restoration
Our projects are grounded in two main approaches: restoring fire-damaged areas and building fire-resistant landscapes. Restoration involves planting native species, including plants that are naturally resistant to fire, which can help slow down the spread of future fires. Fire-resistant plants, such as certain species of shrubs and trees, can act as natural barriers, creating buffers that reduce the likelihood of wildfire spread.
But restoring a landscape isn’t just about planting trees—it’s about creating resilient ecosystems. For example, in areas where wildfires have reduced the natural cover, we work to restore native plants that help prevent erosion and improve soil health. Healthier soil, in turn, supports more robust plant growth, making the ecosystem better able to withstand future fires.
Featured Project: Regreening the Cinturón Verde in Honduras
One of our most impactful initiatives in wildfire resilience is the Cinturón Verde project in Honduras. This project is a large-scale restoration effort focused on the 96,500-hectare Cinturón Verde, an essential watershed area that supplies water to Tegucigalpa, Honduras’s capital city. This region experiences severe wildfire threats, as an estimated 80% of forest loss in Honduras is due to fires, particularly in Francisco Morazán, where the project is based.
The Cinturón Verde landscape includes protected areas, rural communities, urban fringes, and agricultural zones. It’s also home to three major water sources: Las Laureles Dam, La Concepción Dam, and La Tigra National Park. Forest fires in this region not only threaten biodiversity and forest health but also endanger the water resources that thousands of people depend on.
Our field teams collaborate with local water boards, government officials, and farming communities to address the root causes of these fires. They work tirelessly to restore the landscape by planting fire-resistant native species, clearing out hazardous deadwood that can fuel fires, and improving overall climate resilience. Together, these efforts contribute to a healthier ecosystem that can withstand future fires, protect vital water resources, and support diverse plant and animal species.
