World Wildlife Day: Time to act

World Wildlife Day

On March 3rd, the world will unite to celebrate World Wildlife Day. This presents an opportunity and a moment to reflect on the challenges and importance of wildlife. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2013, and pin-points the urgent need to conserve and protect the countless species that live on our planet. Indeed, wildlife is essential for healthy ecosystems, sustainable development, and human well-being.

Biodiversity protects the systems that sustain human life, provides food, clean air, medicine, and countless resources that sustain human society. Yet, global biodiversity is in crisis. Habitat destruction, climate change, poaching, and land fragmentation have driven many species away and close to the brink of extinction. World Wildlife Day serves as a sustainable reminder that conservation is about protecting entire ecosystems including forests, marine reserves, wetlands, etc.

2025 Theme: Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet

Every year, World Wildlife Day highlights a very critical issue in conservation. The 2025 theme, Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet, focuses on the financial resources needed to protect biodiversity while empowering communities. Achieving successful conservation efforts requires funding for active protection measures such as patrolling, fencing, and camera installations to fight threats like poaching and habitat destruction. Investing in these efforts helps restore ecosystems, boost local economies, and ensure long-term survival of species. Everyone, including governments, businesses, conservation groups, and individuals, has a key role to play in supporting and sustaining these initiatives.

The Role of Ecosystem Restoration

One of the most effective ways to protect wildlife is through ecosystem restoration. In Ethiopia, efforts to restore one of the oldest dry afromontane forests are helping to combat desertification and secure water sources for over 26,000 people who depend on the land for survival. In Brazil, reforestation projects along the Tietê River are protecting vital water bodies from pollution and soil erosion while testing new restoration techniques that aim to minimize chemical use. These initiatives demonstrate how restoring nature benefits wildlife, strengthens communities, and improves resilience against environmental threats. Restoring degraded landscapes and marine environments helps species recover, supports local communities, and enhances resilience to climate change. Successful restoration efforts have already shown promising results.

Wildlife conservation success stories

Conservation efforts have achieved some amazing success stories despite the obstacles, and rewilding initiatives in North America and Europe have made it possible for species like wolf and bison to return to the wild; owing to conservation measures and legal protections. Conservation initiatives in Indonesia are promoting biodiversity recovery and providing local fishing communities with food security. Projects in the region focus on coral reef restoration by transplanting healthy corals, active protection and surveillance of marine protected areas, and outreach activities with local fishermen and children. In addition, the Greater One-Horned Rhino, once on the verge of extinction, has made a strong recovery in Nepal and India; thanks to anti-poaching measures and habitat conservation of our partners. Sea turtles have seen increased hatchling survival rates worldwide due to community-led conservation efforts and stricter protection laws.

Looking ahead

As biodiversity loss accelerates, the need for global cooperation has never been more urgent with conservation not just being the responsibility of governments and NGOs. Every individual has a role to play in protecting wildlife. We can be guaranteed a future where wildlife exists alongside humans and involves restoration of ecosystems, implementing protection efforts and encouraging strong connections between humans and nature.
